an installation by Joel Derksen
curated by Elisa de Martini
From the evening of the 2nd of November the reception of DigitasLBi will be the canvas for the Canadian graphic designer Joel Derksen installation Across the Dotted Line.
The global marketing and technology agency, based in Brick Lane, hosts a monthly exhibition program curated by Elisa de Martini. November selection is all about creativity and how to subvert its boundaries.
The entire reception is covered by a graphic, dynamic boundary-wrapping installation of colour, form and pattern. The show has been installed overnight, by wrapping and hand-tearing the large-scale paper artwork. Across the Dotted Line has been specifically created to fit and play within the DigitasLBi space. It is a graphic expression of expanding your own limits, pushing against your own sensibilities into new territories and ultimately finding freedom in the unknown. It takes its inspiration from the patterns, textiles, and grit of East London. All these motifs find their own meaning once merged together with the artist’s experience. The result is an installation that reinterprets the creative energy of London by a newcomer.
Joel Derksen is a multi-award-winning designer, originally from Canada. After several years working in Toronto with Lowe Roche, Grip (Dentsu) and Anomaly, he joined the global innovation consultancy IDEO. Joel moved to London to produce work that links the edges of design and art, and has worked with clients such as Nike, Bud Light, Carlsberg, and a range of others. His work as a designer has been recognised by Cannes, OneShow and Graphis.
